Painting competition: Scout biker WIP

Here are the promised images of the biker for my space marine scout bike.  This is my first attempt at painting yellow power armour.  More pictures and details after the jump...
I found getting the smooth yellow base coat from which to work was the hardest bit.  I undercoated in grey so I wasn't working up from black but even so it took quite a few thinned coats of base yellow to get something I was happy with.  After that the painting with washes (this time seraphim sepia) went quite well, allowing me to build up some nice gradual colour changes as well as hard edges.  The highlights were done with screaming skull.

I'm quite pleased with the freehand chapter badge and checks but remind me not to do a regular pattern on a double curvature surface any time soon.

The chest eagle was done in red with a blue wash to contrast with the yellow armour, not strictly Lamenters but kind of fits with the blood angels successor thing.  The bike itself is nearly finished so hopefully I'll post the completed model fairly soon.

As always please feel free to post any comments or questions below.

  1. Love it Rob, excellent yellow and the free hand is awesome. I'm going to have to try working up from grey at some point.

Above all though, I like this guys face. Hats off to you sir!

  2. I like the red better than the bone/gold on the chest eagle - good call there. I agree, that face is the focal point for sure.

  3. Cheers guys, I hadn't really thought much about the face but now that you mention it I think the dark red and dark metallics allow it to stand out more than you would expect on a yellow model.

  4. Very nice, I agree about the face, very well painted, the only critic I would give would be a head swap but that's just me being picky, I just don't like the scout heads. Mine are all swapped with marine and catachan bare heads :-). Also i love the effect you've got on the ballistic cloth. That's something I find is easy to spoil but you've nailed it.

  7. They were based in a mixture of mid grey and screaming skull, then roughly highlighted with a mixture which had more screaming skull in it, the whole area was then washed with nuln oil and finally nuln oil was painted into areas that I wanted to darken without letting it pool. Hope that helps.
